An interstate moving company must set up and maintain a tariff. A tariff is a document that contains all of a moving company’s rates, charges, and service terms for moving a customer’s household possessions. A tariff must be made available for a customer’s review. STB regulations require tariffs to be clear and easy to follow so that a customer can readily understand the applicable rates, charges and services terms.

Hanseatic Moving Services offers valuation coverage options to help protect your belongings during your move or while being stored. In addition to state-of-the-art packing materials and practices, Hanseatic Moving Services protects your move by looking out for your possessions in transit or storage with valuation coverage. This is a predetermined amount of liability that a mover has for your property during the move. (Note: valuation coverage is not insurance).
Shipment Protection
The term “Fully Insured” can be confusing and only relates to the mandated business coverage for liability, property damage, cargo and workers compensation. “Fully Insured” does not include coverage for loss or damage to your possessions.
Licensed movers must provide a minimum coverage of $0.60 per pound per article with their rates to cover your household and personal items. Most companies offer additional coverage for an added cost through third party or insurance companies to protect you against a loss or damage (coverage is subject to the terms and deductibles you request). Be aware, you will automatically default to $0.60 per pound unless you request additional coverage.
Whatever level of protection you desire must be decided prior to the beginning of your move and filled in on the “order for service” form. Coverage for self-storage is not included.
Option 1: Legal Liability Coverage
All movers must automatically insure your possessions for $0.60 per pound per article. Although this is at no charge to you it is usually insufficient to cover the replacement of most items. Example: If a 60″ flat screen LED TV weighs 100 pounds and is damaged during the move, you would only receive $60.00 dollars. That is why we suggest purchasing additional coverage.
Option 2: Valuation
Some local and long-distance movers may offer ‘Increased valuation’ coverage through their insurance carrier for an additional charge. This type of coverage is like insurance in that it increases the mover’s liability from $1.00 per lb. up to the amount that you declare on the order for service. Coverage rates and limits are contained in the mover’s tariff. Movers that offer this are covered by their insurance company, up to the limit of cargo coverage per truck load. This coverage is provided while in transit or while in storage with the mover, as long as you pay the premiums and is subject to the deductible and maximum coverage that you have selected.
For local moves we calculate coverage on 1,000 pounds of goods per room, or $6,000 in coverage for every room we move. The amount of valuation coverage you carry during your move is up to you. Independent insurance agencies suggest a replacement value for your personal belongings of $8-$10 per pound and no more than $50 per article, or about 70 percent of the cost of your home.
What can affect my coverage or limit OUR liability?
- Packing perishable, dangerous, or hazardous materials. Refer to resource guide on what you cannot pack!
- Packing and unpacking your own boxes can save you money, yet it limits your mover’s liability.
- Choosing legal liability coverage when your household goods are valued at more than $1.00 in NJ or 60 cents per pound, per article in VA.
- Failing to notify your mover in writing about articles of extraordinary value.
- We do not move jewelry, cash, coins, or currency and cannot take responsibility for their loss.
Hanseatic Moving Services valuation coverage is underwritten by Mover’s Choice Insurance Program. As with any agreement, please read the terms and conditions carefully.
Option 3: Insurance
There are two types of insurance; transit and depository coverage.
Transit insurance covers your goods during the move from the moment it is placed on the mover’s truck, until it’s delivered. Some policies include delayed delivery for limited time periods, or if it is in the mover’s storage for a short term known as ‘Storage in Transit’. Check the terms with your local mover.
Depository insurance covers goods placed into a mover’s warehouse for extended storage. You must declare the total value of everything that is being moved. We advise consumers to consider additional coverage and to check their homeowner or dwellers insurance for coverage.
